All projects and activities listed relate to National Garden Clubs, Inc, and Texas Garden Clubs, Inc.

CONTINUING PROJECTS

    1.  Arbor Day Observance (P*, C*)

   Plant a tree after the February meeting at the VA Hospital’s Fisher House. Fisher House provides temporary lodging to families of   
   hospitalized VA patients.  Clubs may make financial contributions to the Arbor Day Fund.

 

 

    2. Award a HFGC Scholarship  (C)

   Committee awards this scholarship from the HFGC Scholarship Fund to a currently enrolled student at a Texas college or university

 

 

3. Community Concerns Projects

Star of Hope Project (P*, C*)

Clubs and individuals bring toys for distribution to needy children through the auspices of Star of Hope Mission, December 12 at the Houston Garden Center.

 

Poinsettias Project (P*, C*)

Purchase poinsettias for distribution to area nursing homes, hospitals and/or shelters.  Clubs and individuals are asked to make financial contributions to the Poinsettia Fund.

  

Flowers/Plants for VA Hospital Chapel (P*, C*)

Continuing the tradition of clubs or individuals placing flowers or potted plants in the VA Hospital Chapel that was started by Houston Council of Garden Clubs over 60 years ago.  Clubs sign up with the chairman.

 

 

4.  Community Service Projects

Houston Botanic Garden (P* C*)

Support effort to build a botanic garden for Houston. Visit www.botanicgardenofhouston.org for information on the site.  Clubs may contribute to this project.

 

Margaret Sharpe Memorial Rose Garden (P*, C*)

Located on the University of Houston campus, this garden is a memorial to a founder of the Texas Rose Rustlers and former President of Federation.  Clubs are asked to contribute to this project now in phase two.

    Federation is working with the Hermann Park Conservancy and the City of Houston in planning the future of the Garden Center. 

Federation Maintains the Inside Plants at the Garden Center

Federation maintains the inside plants at the Garden Center and decorates the building for Christmas.

 

World Gardening – “Seeds for Life” (P*, C*)

Clubs may donate commercially packaged vegetable or flower seeds at each Federation meeting, to be distributed through various community organizations, both in the US and Overseas. Monetary donations will be used to purchase food product seed.

 

5.  Youth Gardening (C)

Encourage and offer support and resources for clubs working with young people in organized youth clubs, community organizations, schools, churches, neighbor-hoods or a club member’s front porch.  Contact the chair-man to let Federation know how your club is or wants to be working with young people, and let Federation serve you.

3.   Provide Authoritative Speakers to Member Clubs*

Chairman maintains a current list of speakers and assists clubs in obtaining speakers.

 

 

4.   Provide Qualified Flower Show Judges to Member Clubs*

Chairman will assist clubs in setting up panels of

Judges to judge flower shows.

 

 

5.   Garden Therapy Program*

Support Brookwood Community

 

 

6.   Print and Distribute Federation Directory*

Daphne Light

Directory is published yearly to be used by all clubs and board members in order to conduct an effective program within the organization.

 

 

7.   Monthly Newsletter & Horticulture Bulletin*

    Monthly publication sent to member clubs, board members, individual members, and organizations in which membership is 
   held.                                  
 

     8.   Memorial Book*
     Merlene Caine, Chm.

    Maintain a Memorial Book and display the names of deceased persons honored by Federation members.

 

 

      9.   Library*

Liz Gibbs, Chm.

Maintain a library of horticulture and floral design books, references, and HFGC memorabilia at the Houston Civic Garden Center.  Provide access to library for members.

 

 

10. Attendance Award

Mary Kay Ellis, Chm.

Cash awards of $25 will be given to member clubs with the largest percentage of club members attending Federation meetings from May 1, 2009 to May1, 2010. Percentage to be based on total membership as reported in this Directory.  Three Award categories: clubs with a membership of up to 15 members; clubs with a membership of 16-30 members; and clubs with a membership of 31+ members.
